Kokomo Beach Curaçao: Vaersenbaai's Beach Club

Kokomo Beach Curaçao (Vaersenbaai) guide: beach-club vibe, the famous floating KOKOMO sign, snorkeling, sunsets, crowds, and how to get there near Willemstad.

The Vibe: Curaçao's Easiest Full Lazy Day

Kokomo Beach sits on Vaersenbaai, a sheltered bay on the road toward Bullenbaai, about 15 minutes southwest of Willemstad. The far west coves are the beaches you drive an hour to for the view. Kokomo is the one you drive to when you want a sunbed, table service, and no decisions for a few hours. It runs as a proper beach club: sunbeds and shaded cabanas on the sand, a restaurant and bar right at the water's edge.

That is the whole pitch. No cooler to pack, no shade to hunt for, no long drive. Show up with a towel and a swimsuit.

Swimming and Snorkeling: Calm, But Not a Reef Showcase

The bay is protected and the water stays calm most days. This is a float-and-cool-off beach, not one where you fight current or chop. The entry is sandy with rocks scattered close to shore, so pack water shoes if your feet are sensitive.

Snorkeling off the beach is decent, not spectacular. The rocky patches near shore hold small fish, and the bay doubles as a shore dive site: an on-site dive operator uses a longer reef further out for intro dives and certifications. Divers and snorkelers sometimes spot frogfish, seahorses, or a passing turtle; treat any of that as a bonus, not a promise. If you want a vivid coral wall, that is further west. Kokomo is a swim first, a casual snorkel second.

The Photo Everyone Takes: The Floating KOKOMO Sign

You have probably seen this beach online before you land. Large floating letters spelling KOKOMO sit in the shallows a short swim from shore, and they are the most photographed spot on this stretch of coast. A wooden swing just offshore gives you a second shot, and the jetty a third.

Want the photo without a line of people waiting for the same photo? Go at opening. By late morning on a weekend there is often a wait, and midday light is harsh and flat. Early morning or the last hour before sunset gives you softer light and fewer strangers in the frame.

Photo tip: Wear something that can get wet. The letters and the swing both sit in the water, and the good shot has you sitting on them, not posing near them from the sand.

Food and Drink

The restaurant and bar do full table service with a real lunch and dinner menu, plus cocktails, cold beer, and fresh juices. Sunbeds and shaded two-person cabanas rent by the day; rates shift, so check on arrival. One rule to know before you pack: outside food and drink are generally not permitted, so leave the cooler behind and eat on site.

Sunset Appeal

Vaersenbaai faces west and Kokomo leans into it. The bar stays open into the evening, and the beach gets a second life once the swim-only day-trippers clear out. Sundays bring a lively happy hour with live entertainment, and there is the occasional full moon party. For a quiet sunset, come on a weekday evening. For music with your sunset, come on a Sunday.

Getting There and Parking

From Willemstad, follow the route toward Westpunt, turn onto the road to Bullenbaai near the large supermarket on that stretch, continue a few kilometers, and turn left at the signed Kokomo turnoff. About 15 minutes from the city center. Parking is free in a large lot right on the beach, so there is no hunt and no hauling gear. A rental car is easiest; taxis will make the trip, but arrange your return pickup with the driver, because you will not flag one down out here.

If you would rather not drive at all, our Half-Day Hato Caves tour stops at Kokomo after the caves and the flamingo sanctuary (a swim to close out the morning), with a driver-guide handling the logistics. Our Hato Caves guide covers what to expect underground.

For families doing the caves-plus-beach combination, kids ride cheaper: child tickets are currently $50 against $75 for adults.

Best Time to Visit and Crowds

Kokomo gets busy. Plan around it. Weekends draw the biggest numbers (Sundays especially, with the happy hour crowd), and cruise ship days bring a wave of visitors looking for an easy beach with amenities. Before ten on a weekday morning is your best shot at open sunbeds and a short wait at the letters.

If what you want is near-empty sand and you do not mind the longer drive, go west. Our Grote Knip beach guide covers the postcard cove on that end of the island, and our complete Curaçao beaches guide compares Kokomo against every other major beach.

Who Kokomo Beach Suits

Couples who want a comfortable full day without planning. Anyone who prefers a beach club over a rugged cove, or would rather be 15 minutes from town than 45. Families do fine here too (calm water, facilities close by), though the rocky entry means younger kids may want water shoes and a steady hand.

Skip it if you are chasing a serious reef right off the sand or want the beach to yourself. And if a happy hour crowd is the opposite of your idea of a beach day, look further down the coast.

What Kokomo Is Not

It is not wilderness. Kokomo is a well-run beach club, with beach-club trade-offs: it gets loud and crowded, particularly on Sundays and around cruise arrivals, and the shoreline is rocky in places. If you are picturing a secluded, no-facilities cove, this is not it. What it delivers, reliably, is an easy, photogenic day close to town, which is exactly what plenty of people want from a Curaçao beach day. For ideas beyond the beach, our Curaçao things to do guide has the full list.
